Fusion Fest 2 March 29-30th in KC

Class Schedule and Registration for Fusion Fest 2008
This year we’re doing things a little different. We decided to try the individual class payment. So you aren’t forced to take a class you don’t want and so you can afford to take only the classes you want.
Class descriptions for Saturday:
9:30-11:30 Amy Sigil- early registration is $35.00 after March 15th $40.00
“HOTPOTTURBOTRIBALTRICKS” NEW! Strap-on your jet-packs. In this workshop you’ll get the skinny on what happens when you let off a lot of steam while dancing really well, really fast. You’ll learn and drill two original combos snatched directly from the Hot Pot Studio tribal vocabulary, both equipped for improv and ready for show. All levels welcome.
11:45-1:15 Jemira Ali-early registration $25.00 after March 15th $30.00
Jemira will be teaching energetic veil moves with some spinning. You’ll cover some basics and then put it into high gear. This is not veil work to fall asleep too. Bring a half circle veil 2 ½ yards to 3 yards long. All levels welcome.
2:00-3:30 Brandy Bollin-early registration $30.00 after March 15th $35.00
Brandy will begin with basic moves in the Tribal Evolution improv format, teaching students how to combine movements in duets and trios to create complete, entertaining improv presentations. All levels welcome.
3:45-5:15 Reed Watkins-early registration $25.00 after March 15th $30.00
Reed will be teaching traditional sword cuts, stances, and maneuvering from Chinese, Japanese, and European sword schools. Drills to help you look like you know what your doing. He will incorporate fluid martial moves used with sword and belly dance. This is for intermediate to advanced dancers. You may want to do some upper body strengthening before hand.
Class descriptions for Sunday:
10:00-11:30 Carla Horn--early registration $25.00 after March 15th $30.00
Carla will teach how to make a hula hoop if you don’t already have one. Supplies for the Hula will be extra but should cost under $15.00. She will teach different hooping tricks and show you how to put it together in some combos and a short choreography. All levels welcome.
11:45-1:15 Brandy Bollin -early registration $30.00 after March 15th $35.00
As the students progress, more advanced moves and long combos will be incorporated into large group formations so that we can all dance together. As time permits, we will work with different formations for groups of any size that work best from the big stage to the smallest restaurant setting and put them into our practice. Bring your zills!
2:15-4:15 Amy Sigil- early registration is $35.00 after March 15th $40.00
“Moves You’ve Hopefully Never Thought of Before” This fresh-approach workshop will reveal the secrets of UNMATA’s modern belly dance fusion. Each movement will emphasize specific technique and capture the nuance of UNMATA’s popular style. Because this class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer, a sufficient understanding of balance, timing, and isolation skill is prerequisite. Curriculum can easily be adapted for cabaret or tribal disciplines.

Hussey and I are having some folks over Saturday night and I wanted to invite you guys out too. I won't guarantee there'll be drumming/dancing, but we can easily take over the basement. We're having a family dinner earlier (at 6) so it should be safe to come over around 8-ish. There might even still be left overs...

Found out there is a block party in front of our store tomorrow, Sunday, so we're having a Hafla. We'll be there from noon on. I figure we can drum and dance after 5 when it starts to cool off. There will be other bands and festivities happening. So come on down and if you get hot you can cool off in the store. The location is 1603 West 39th about 4 blocks east of Stateline or KU Med Center. Hope to see you there.

Ok... so here is the latest update.

We are going to see Transformers at 6:10 Imax showing... Meeting outside the
AMC at about 5:30

After the movie we will be going over to a club called Blonde (its at 100
ward parkway) on the plaza.

None of us have been there as far as I know... so if its terrible we will go
to plan B also known as Fuel or a near by home (cheap drinks and no cover
charge).

Hope to see you all there.

Just in case you happen to be down at the Union Station between 4:30-6:00 on Friday or Saturday. There will be belly dancers dancing at the Union Cafe through the middle of May until the Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit is over. Since Jivete and I danced at their opening the Cafe thought it would be neat to have some dancers to add to the atmosphere of the exhibit. Some of the dancers, from the troop formerly known as Rasa Badia that used to do Ren Fair, are myself, Belle, Jivete and a non Rasa Badia dancer Nicole. Hope to see some of our friends down there. The food is pretty good and pretty reasonable but you have to get there early since they close at 6:00.

Okay it's that time again. Let's have a hafla! Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can dance outside around a fire pit. Also, as long as we can dance outside, everyone is welcome to bring hoops and fire toys (I'm sure one of us can be a safety). And maybe, hopefully, drummers...

Let's aim for 7:30 until whenever. Kids are welcome. I have a 10 year old.

Just spent a bit of time thinking on future projects and figured I could get some feedback here.

I fell in with some bad company recently--a guitarist! The Digital Air Conditioned Hippy (Kyrka) was searching for some hand percussion to accompany him and I volunteered. To make a longish story short, it's a good collaboration and I'm looking to do lots in the future with him.

That leads me to this: I'm going to be writing tunes for guitar and ME percussion. Some of it may use maqam, a lot of it will use western scales and harmony (though it may exhibit Arabic influence). If we work up a set of material, would anybody be interested in choreographing and dancing to it? I can see live shows with us and dancers, and I'd like to know if that's a reasonable vision....

Also, we've discussed using looping equipment when performing to expand our sonic presence. I know y'all dance to recorded tunes and live tunes (when you can). Looping performances have a bit of a different vibe, due to laying in the different loops live, and there will be more visible electronic equipment involved. Would that put you off of dancing in a live performance? Is the illusion of acoustic music at all important? (Seeing as how I don't know what most of you dance to, you could be all dancing to electronica and I wouldn't know!)

I'd like to spend some time working on dancing to common drum rhythms and some basic zill work. For those of you that have zills, bring them. I plan on calling Betsy to see if she had any extra pairs (I know she's selling them I just don't know if she left any behind). If anyone wants to get some, be sure to get the double slot variety. For the later classes, the emphasis will be on the dancing to drum rhythm part with just a little bit on zills. For the 7:00 class it will be more combined. Also if you guys want, check out shira.net for an extensive tutorial on zilling. .

I will be starting up classes again in Jan. We are in the middle of moving stuff out of the basement to turn it into a studio. Don't know if it will all be done by Jan 1st. I have room for 4 students in a begining class fir 8:05 p.m. on Mondays. Several people have contacted me about when I would be taking on new students and this would be the time. Private e-mail me if you are interested. I will be having class on the 1st. Let me know if you don't think you'll make it because of hangovers. I will also be gone the last weekend in Jan. to go on my semiannual buying trip for all kinds of Belly Dance Goodies. See you all soon.

Will the 7:00 p.m. class come about 15 minutes early so you can look at the swords and not eat into class time too much. I have 15 swords so there should be enough for anyone who wants one. I also have some zills in the $12.00-20.00 range. See you all tonight.

It was pricey, but after the long wait.... when the email came I lost it and hit the paypal button. ;)

Monday Night Beginner Class

I have had an over whelming response to people wanting to take my Monday night beginner class from 8:05-9:00. I really only have room for 4-5 people to comfortably fit in my living room. So at this point are any of you willing to come to a 9:05-10:00 class? This would only be temporary till we get the basement ready, hopefully by the end of Jan. Then I can fit about 8 people in a class. Right now I have 7 people wanting to come. Let me know if anyone wouldn't mind doing a later class. I might possible open up another night(Thursday?) and that might spur my husband into getting the basement in shape faster as he doesn't get to spend many evenings with me. Thursday is supposed to be his and my night to practice. Thanks, Layla

Some Guy Named Larry

Has some guy named Larry asked to be your friend and then proceeded to make verbal advances? There is nothing wrong with that but it appears that he has been going through my friends list and hitting on a number of my friends. Even going as far to write that I suggested they hook up. And that does bother me. I have had 2 people complain to me that he has been creepy toward them. I know he seemed a bit friendly when I agreed to be his friend but when I mentioned my husband he never said anything again that seemed like a come-on. So just for the record, I do not know this man or anything about him. I've taken him off my friends list and if your having a problem with him you should too.

Just to let you know we will be performing at Kris Kinder at 3:00 on the stage. So we need to meet up by 2:45 to make it over there. We need to scare up some drummers for the open dancing after the performance for about 30 minutes. I will probable duck back to the booth. It needs to end by 4:00 so they can set the stage for court. I forget what it cost to get in but if you go to the Barony of Forgotten Sea website info is there including driving directions. We'll talk more at the next class. I figure we'll be practicing for that for the rest of Nov.

"I regret to share with you that Tahseen, my husband of 38 years, passed
away
tonight as I held his hand.

He will be interred tomorrow in the Memorial Park Cemetery and a time
for a
memorial service will be announced later.

Kathe Alkoudsi"

I am working on a location for the memorial service. Any suggestions for Lawrence? Kathe wants a neutral location where the belly dance community can gather.

We will have a dance class on Thursday Oct. 12th from 5-6. Sewing on our costumes will be done afterwards.

Monday the 16th I'd like to have a combined class so we can practice getting around each other like it will be on stage. Let's get together at 7:00 and we can go to 8:30 when Emera and Dana have to leave. If we need to finish anything up on our costumes let's do it afterwards.

Friday the 20th we'll meet as close to 5:00 as possible and have a dress rehearsal. Leave for the show by 6:30.

See you all soon.

This is just to let everyone know on this tribe Kundalini is no more. We are all friends. There wasn't any huge fight. Our lives have just been going different directions and it's been hard to plan anything or practice regularly. So hopefully, we'll get together and dance sometime in the future we just don't know when and it's not anytime soon. I will be changeing the tribe to Friends of the Silk Road for my student troop so I can keep them informed about classes and upcoming events. Many of you know us personally and would like to keep tabs on us. Those who were Kundalini fans if you want to stay on board that's great but I understand if you decide to leave this tribe. Thanks for everyones support and coming to our performances. It was a lot of fun.

The Future of Kundalini Troop

I would have private emailed everyone but there is know way to do it on tribe where I don't have to write everythiung 5 times. And I don't have everyones private e-mail. So this is going out to the public domain but this is actually for Belle, Jivete, Mira, and Satowi to respond to. Since we don't practice anymore and don't really plan anything together does everyone want to disband as the Kundalini dancers? I know Jivete never considered herself as one, more as a guest dancer. I posed the question of whether or not we wanted to change practice night shortly after Fringe and NOONE responded to that question. If we are no longer going to dance together as Kundalini I would like to change the tribe to Friends of the Silk Road since that is what I've been dancing under with my students and other friends. This does not mean I don't want to dance with any of you. I would love it if we could all dance together. It just seems that it hasn't been happening for a while and I'd like to use this tribe instead of starting a whole nother one. Otherwise, I fell that we are already unofficially disbanded. Please let me know if any of you feel differently about the situation or would like to take over moderating this tribe or you want it to stay as Kundalini Dance. Thanks for your consideration in this matter. Layla

Looking for Host Family for Egyptian Exchange Student -- URGENT!

Who's interested in opening their home to a 15-year-old Egyptian exchange student for the coming school year?

I got a phone call from a representative of Academic Year in America, a federal student exchange program. They have a boy by the name of Ahmed Mahmoud getting on a plane in Egypt tonight. He'll be in Washington, D.C. for a few days, and then on to Kansas City. But he doesn't have a host family yet. They must be desperate, LOL!, because they looked up belly dancers on the internet, trying to find people who are interested in the Egyptian culture who might be willing to open their home to him. Kansas City metro area only. Lawrence, Independence, Blue Springs and Liberty school districts won't accept him. But all other high schools in the area are an option.

He is proficient in English (10 years) and will have a monthly allowance. The host family is expected to include him in their family activities, provide meals, transportation in the area, etc. He doesn't have to have his own room but is supposed to have a bed and place to store his belongings.

If you would like more info, we need to move quickly, so please get hold of me right away, and I'll put you in touch with the exchange program. Their website is www.academicyear.org

He is very mature for a 15 year old and he says it's because he reads so much and is involved in so many organizations. For example, he is the head of the library, art, press and computer clubs and is also interested in leadership, peace and conflict and youth programs. Ahmed also plays basketball and football. He does not like to be lazy. He says he likes to wake up early and take a walk outside before starting his day. Ahmed would like to work with computers for a living because he says it is the link between countries and it's the future. Ahmed's favorite subject is history.
Busking for First Fridays

I know we've talked about busking on the plaza. How about first fridays? Last time I was out there I noticed there are tons of buskers. I'm not sure of the rules but I'm sure as long as we're not on private property it's fine. Also, my friend Lindsey has a loft across from Birdies, I'm sure she'd let us shake it out front. So who'd like to join me this Friday? I have a thing later that night but it's late later. Also I say we head out early to claim our spot. Musicians...?

Change in Practice

First, I want to say thanks to everyone who came out last night. It was a beautiful evening. Everyone looked great. Glad the wind didn't blow the swords off our heads. Secondly, how does everyone feel about having practice on Friday nights? I was thinking about it and realized we had some miscommunications happening because we don't see each other on a regular basis anymore. I know I can't get together every Friday night but it would be more often than we have been on Wednesdays. Plus we could socialize afterwards if we want. I really missed doing a troop dance and I know everyone is burntout doing our old choreographies. So... let me know what you want to do. Layla

Rich just sent this... I'll post his email addy at the bottom as well:

Just a reminder to all, I need the names of all participants and their one guest by Saturday morning 9 AM. That will be my last login time for the day

The cost of admission is $5 for the party. Free, if the party goer has a Fringe Fest button, which is a one time purchase when buying a ticket ot tickets to a Festival show. So I really need the names for the gate for those coming in free.

Thanks for your co-operation.

Rory Primus had a birthday a few days ago and some of us are going to get together Wednesday the 12 (tomorrow/tonight) at about 8 at O'dowds on the Plaza.

It is a bar... there will be smoke... there will be noise ... there will be a live band.

There will also be a friend celebrating the day of his birth.

I know its short notice but if have the time I sure he would like to see you.

Must go hunting for new dance flavor! Anyone else want to come out with us? And what time works for everyone?

Ok so what are you doing the first weekend in may?

So far as far as I can tell the choices are:
Interfuse
Crown Tournament
Cirque de Baladi
Indian Classical Music

Please give us a shout and let us know what you are up to so everyone can meet -up at whatever they choose.

Right now I think I am leaning towards Crown, because even after all the reminders I forgot to get IF tickets.

Anthony and I have decided to do a handfasting. I have been meaning to post it for like a month now and just keep getting busy. Anyway If you are coming to Gulf Wars please be at the Known World Party about an hour early. Ansteorra is hosting the party so I will kind of become our reception, he he. Anthony's friend Sir Keift will be performing the ceremony. Hey that reminds me we need Apple mead and fresh baked bread so if anyone can bring my mead or their own to the war that would be greatly appreciated. Hope to see you there, Belle

I found this on Massive Tassel's tribe, I guess they are opening for it or something. I clicked on the link for the flyer and saw that my friend Bucho is in it too. It should be quite a show, I have known Bucho since school in Kirksville.

Alright ladies, I have a gig in a restaurant on Feb. 22nd and that might turn into a couple more gigs if I don't fall on my face or otherwise suck while dancing. Amae the girl that I have been dancing with down here has several gigs around town and has lost most of the girls she used to dance with because of Katrina. Anyway you guys should come down and visit me, there are tons of cool places to hang out and Mardi Gras season has officially begun.
By the way it was really wierd to dance at a seminar without any of you guys. I really missed you.

One of mine is Phil Thornton in which I'm searching.

He along with Fritz Heede & Micheal Beach (with whom I can find all
over the place) are my three sources for the Best BELLY Dance music
I could or would ever want to hear. That's what I used to use/play
all of the time before I once again (after leaving it for a minute)
am 'back into the Dance'.

This time as many of you know..I have a vested interest beyond the
strictly social & entertainment benefits. Namely my newly started
Foundation. And to learn more about it (and me) please go to:
www.myspace.com/linny_g ..plus if you have ANY information on
where
I can find music produced by PHIL THORNTON, then 'e' me
here..thanks!

I might as well tick Tribe off by naming just about all of my other
Group sources (and did I tell you about yahoo.. bellydance.meetup.com/11/memb
er/2226428/ and Bhuz.com :-)?),
~Linny~

PS. And join me at MySpace or here on Tribe as a Friend or Associate if the
Spirit moves you!

Okie-dokie folks!

We have ECM at KU in Lawrence booked for the 21st of this month from 5 pm to 11 pm. We can start and stop anytime between then, but let's plan on starting the Hafla at 7. If you show up earlier, we'll put you to work moving chairs and such. I'll plan on being there at 6:30 p.m.

I plan on bringing and/or making some turkish coffee to KEEP US WIDE AWAKE.

ECM's address is 1204 Oread, Lawrence, KS. If you get into Lawrence and head up 12th Street, ECM will be on your left-hand side. We'll be up on the 2nd level which has a HUGE (and I'm talking HUGE, here) floor space. Donations for the building are greatly appreciated, but not necessary.

Please feel free to bring munchies, deserts, instruments, friends and family. This is a laid-back affair to just jam together, exchange moves, laugh, joke, be silly.....

I just wanted to thank everyone who came out and supported us at the Donkey Show last night. We had a blast and I hope everyone else did too. It was nice to see so many of our friends and all the other great acts. I almost felt like it was a reunion of sorts. I saw people from high school, ren fair, old and new friends, it was really neat. Hopefully, we'll be doing some more shows in the future and we'll keep you posted on tribe.

6-9 PARTY! Sunday December 18th!

So now that I have your attention, Anthony will officially be here Sunday December 18th and we are going to have a party to celebrate. It's a 69 party because it will go from 6 to 9pm. What were you thinking I meant?!?

Please Please Please come and welcome Anthony!

Anyway there will be food and beer and wine, and if you want to bring anything to eat or drink that would be cool. Also any board games, drums or other activities would be fun as well.

Admission to the party requires that you carry at least one item of Anthony's from his truck up to the appartment or down to the storage area.

Please RSVP as soon as possible. So I know how much food and drinks to buy.
Calling me is best, but e-mailing me is good too.
