Just got the call today girls. Finally some info on Fringe Fest. Are any of you alive? Give me a heads up if you'd still like to come out. I'm going to try and get a group of people together to jam as it's apparently a Voodoo theme and the 'voodon' don't believe in money ;)

Mon, May 15, 2006 - 11:56 AMLooks like July 29th (a Saturday Night) behind Grinders. He's wanting midwest burners and LOTS of bellydance/drums. A voodoo theme :) I'm going to try and start recruiting people to come and see what happens. Email me if you have any questions and I hope you're all doing well!!! -

Re: Fringe....as promised
Mon, May 15, 2006 - 2:35 PMJust curious. Lovin' the bellydance. Lovin' the vodoun drumming & dancing. Why are you interested in combining them? Why not just do the vodoun or samba dancing & drumming. Or drum & dance the Middle Eastern Zar (which has a lot of similarities to vodoun possession dance)? Although I'm not sure I'd want to open myself to possession at Grinders. <big grin> -

Re: Fringe....as promised
Mon, May 15, 2006 - 8:44 PMI think it gives more people in our community a chance to get together and be open to ALL the different styles we've got in the proverbial melting pot ;) It's a somewhat 'unstructured' event and I'd like to make it sort of a hafla-esque environment. It's not every hafla we have the chance to get all dolled up and really jam together without having a structured 'show'. I think it will be a potentially great experience for all of us to open up to all the various styles and flavors we have going on. The other (yes I'm going hippy here) reason is that it's an art festival. My personal take on this event is that it's a chance to get rid of the walls and/or themes. We have a basic guideline to go from and we can become inspired and run with it in our own directions. This sort of mass/cluster of colors and sounds and smells and energies. I'm REALLY excited to see what will come of it :) There's plenty of seminars to do a structured 'in the box' style. I thought it might be fun to cut loose, quit worrying about restrictions and format, and be wild women. Of course you are more than welcome to take that path for you and yours! I'll post the time just as soon as I find out and the more the merrier!!! I'd love to get as many different dancers and musicians to come out of their mundane woodwork for this one.... -

Re: Fringe....as promised
Mon, May 15, 2006 - 9:41 PMNo, you misunderstood me :) I'm not saying it doesn't have structure I'm saying it doesn't have to be completely pre-determined and structured. It doesn't have to be bound by labels and conformity. Some art is based soley on structure...others use complete lack of structure to create. I see this specifically as a chance to break away from a traditionally structured environment to really experience one another as artists. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Re: Fringe....as promised
Tue, May 16, 2006 - 12:48 PMIwa pele, or Pele the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano? -

Re: Fringe....as promised
Tue, May 16, 2006 - 12:53 PMHawaiin Fire Goddess....and this conversation sort curved to the left :) -

Re: Fringe....as promised
Tue, May 16, 2006 - 1:11 PMI'm just trying to wrap my brain around the concept. A Haitian religious theme ... a Polynesian goddess and fire spinners ... Middle Eastern drumming and dancing. Oh, my.
Rada and Petro, by the way, are two different ways to practice Vodoun. Think of the the difference between Papa Ghede and Baron Samedi. Not sure how Pele fits in there.

Re: Fringe....as promised
Tue, May 16, 2006 - 1:33 PMI'll back out of the conversation. It is not my intention to make others uncomfortable. And I wasn't aware that anyone was fighting? I was aware of a spirited discussion regarding a performance concept. -

Re: Fringe....as promised
Tue, May 16, 2006 - 1:40 PMno need to back out, just my feeble attempt at levity.
I do not have the experience or knowledge of the many different types of dance or the names/styles referenced in your post.
My bad.
Please, pay no attention to the girl at the keyboard...

Tue, May 16, 2006 - 5:25 PMAnd I should say kudos to Satowi for having the energy and motivation to get this event organized, and the drive to try to make it as creative as she can. -

I've been stuck in the basement for far too long, and would LOVE to throw down something groovy and ethereal.

Tue, May 16, 2006 - 10:58 PMI am SO THERE!!! We can get all wild and crazy with our costuming and dancing?!! GODS AND GODDESSES, I AM IN HEAVEN!! YAY!!! Re: Fringe....as promised
Wed, May 17, 2006 - 11:55 AMBah, you give me to much credit Inanna ;) A good friend of mine really wanted to do something and invited me to round up dancers. Any excuse to jam with my 'sisters' is...generally speaking...for completely selfish reasons ;) I think it will be a really great time for all of us who can make it. And as for musicians, if you've got it bring it :) Judur, you'd better be out there damn it! I haven't seen you in AGES!!! And (the girls will laugh hysterically at this one) I've decided to go more cabaret. I'm on a Turkish kick lately. I adore tribal but I'd like to play around with something different. Layla, you coming out to play?
