Hi! New to the tribe and Brand New to belly dance! I'm working off of a pretty good video at home right now, but am looking for classes in the Kansas City, Kansas/Missouri area (or close surrounding communities). Any suggestions?

Re: Classes?
Thu, February 23, 2006 - 7:23 PMI have a post on my Banat el Shamal tribe labeled "Continuing Classes" that lists most of the teachers in the KC Metro Area.
Personally, I teach north of the river in Kansas City, Mo., through the North Kansas City Community Education program. We'd love to have you join us.
What video are you working with? -

Re: Classes?
Fri, February 24, 2006 - 10:27 AMI agree ... video tapes can really help students between classes keep up with their practice and get different perspectives ... but it is so helpful to have a teacher who can respond to the students' needs. Not to mention the community. I think my continuing students enjoy socializing with each other as much as they enjoy the dancing.
About the Dolphina videos ... I'm curious ... Does she talk about using the eyes in dancing? I haven't seen any of her videos, but some of my students work with them, and one of them was asking a curious question about eyes the other night.
As for location, my beginning classes are through the North Kansas City School District's continuing education program, and they move me around from school to school. Continuing classes are out of my home near the intersection of Englewood and North Oak Trafficway for the time being, but that may change soon. If everyone who has signed up keeps coming, I'm going to have to find a bigger space to teach in. -

Re: Classes?
Mon, February 27, 2006 - 7:51 AMDolphina does talk sporadically about using the eyes to convey the meaning of the dance. Sort of following along with the "eyes are the window to the soul" theory. And congratulations on having your class take off so well! I'm going to take a "beginning belly dance" class closer to my home, but then hope to continue the education for a long time. Maybe I'll be able to check out your work...maybe you'll even be in a nice new space by then! Good luck! =) -

Mon, February 27, 2006 - 8:02 AMThanks for the info on Dolphina, Edana. I've got one of her videos on order from NetFlix so I can take a look for myself.
Enjoy the dance!

Re: Classes?
Mon, February 27, 2006 - 9:24 AMWhile we're on videos I had to add some of my faves :) I absolutely LOVE Delilah of visionary dance (it's a creepy 1980's hair band look but the girl has amazing technique!), GypsyCaravan (tribal with some great transition moves), and Fat Chance Belly Dance (again tribal but if you're looking to drill technique and clean up your moves, you can't find better!) Hope this helps and they may have some of these at the libraries.
