Re: Dancing this weekend
Tue, July 18, 2006 - 11:44 AMSo is this the schedule? What is our role? My initial understanding was to create atmosphere with a "super hafla" and belly dancers, fire performers galore. However this seems much different to me. What exactly is the competition part? Are there different troops? Lessons?
>11:00 - 11:05, Opening announcements ( MC on stage )
>11:05 - 11:15, First on stage performance
>11:15 - 11:30, MC on stage, short story, Voodoo Priest on stage, talk
up
>belly dance competition, Fringe Festival , etc
>
>11:30 - 11:58, Vesuvius performs, belly dance lessons in sculpture
garden
>
>11:58 - midnight, announce next on stage performance.
>
>midnight - 12:10 , 2nd on stage act
>12:10 - 12:45, Belly dance competitions
>12:45 -12:55, Final stage act.
>12:55 - 1:00, final credits, announcements and closing
>
>All this allows for approximate times with 5 minute lee way.
>If we finish on the early side that's okay. I want to be done by
1:00 AM

Re: Dancing this weekend
Wed, July 19, 2006 - 6:03 AMYeah, I was under the same impression Jivette. I got this schedule this morning. I know the 'lessons' were more mingling with people there and that we could teach or demo stuff if we so desired to do so. As for the competition, I'm fairly sure that's his shimmy contest thing. He seems pretty open to whatever we'd like to do. I just haven't gotten much feedback so he's been sort of winging it until he hear's differently from us. Is anyone available for a practice/brainstorm session this weekend any time? I'd like to get some ideas going and then we can tell him we CAN do as opposed to him guessing :) Layla here's the info:
Grinders and the Zone Sculpture Park
417 East 18th Street
KC, MO 64108
816-472-5454
Looks like announcements start around 11pm that night. I'd like to get there around 9:30 or 10. As far as other troops, I'd love to have more people but everyone is doing the Lawrence thing or out of town. -

Re: Dancing this weekend
Wed, July 19, 2006 - 6:12 AMIt's all been clarified. Competition definitely for spectators, not for dancers, which means it should be fun. I guess 10:30 is the official word though I'm fine getting there earlier. Do we have musicians? -

Wed, July 19, 2006 - 6:39 AMi'm up for a practice session this weekend

Re: Dancing this weekend
Wed, July 19, 2006 - 9:23 AMAs a basement guitarist who really needs to get out and play in front of people - I would really like to be able to get involved.
I was pondering some effects to give my guitar a Sitar sound, with some eastern licks that use lots of open drone strings and such.
I haven't really got "material" together, although I have been sweating over it for a while. (I have like pieces, snippets and suggestions that, if I put them all together, might be worth while.)
All in all, it would be best if I could meet up with you during or shortly after a practice or whatever and see if it's even a good fit really. No sense in dancing to something that doesn't work, eh?
Thoughts?

Re: Dancing this weekend
Wed, July 19, 2006 - 12:19 PMOoh, ooh Layla has sheet music. And any flamenco sounding stuff works great too. And mandolins, banjos, etc also work great for middle eastern music. I'm living right up the street from you for the next week or so, we should get together and jam before I move back to the ghetto. Do you have my number? -
-
Re: Dancing this weekend
Wed, July 19, 2006 - 1:21 PMDon't have your number... will send you a private message with mine.
I have Spencer Thursday through Sunday evening - given the heat, we'll be around.
Also - just spoke with the roomie (Maev) and she's cool with us offering the large air-condidioned dining room at my place some time Saturday to rehearse if you guys need a spot. (Of course it's also self serving, I'd already be there <grin>)

Re: Dancing this weekend
Thu, July 20, 2006 - 7:05 AMOk sorry I have been gone forever, I was out of town all last week and am just now getting back to checking things out. I am still up for dancing. No I don't have metal breasts yet, but I think that coudl be arranged unless they sold the pair I was gonna get. I can practice Sun the 23rd after I get back from Kingdom A&S, or any weeknight. -

Re: Dancing this weekend
Thu, July 20, 2006 - 8:44 AM23rd sounds good to me! Ladies, are you available? And Bob I know Thoron has at least 2 spares he could bring. You are more than welcome to join us :) I've got some ideas and I've got about 2 or 3 other dancers who aren't with troupes who'd like to come and dance as well so we should have plenty of dancing to cover that time. We just need to buckle down and get an outline of some sort. Anyone working with any props they'd like to bring? I'm still slacking in said department ;) Again if anyone can get out one night this weekend we could always meet up someplace to hang out and brainstorm. I feel like I haven't seen you all in ages! I've been majorly slacking where dance is concerned and I really need to kick it back up....or start pilates.....garrrrrr! I smote thee, genetics!!!! -

Re: Dancing this weekend
Thu, July 20, 2006 - 12:07 PMI should be back in town that afternoon/evening. Layla and I have a dual sword dance she and I can perform.

Re: Dancing this weekend
Fri, July 21, 2006 - 10:36 AMGotta love the swords! So Layla, are we going to meet at your house on the 23rd or does anyone else have a better place? Let's get a tenative time set up so we can all try to be there for at least a short bit. -
-
Re: Dancing this weekend
Fri, July 21, 2006 - 1:56 PMIf not at Layla's we can meet at my place in Westport. 3937 Wyoming. No mirrors but plenty of room. I vote for evening-ish. I'd heading out of town, so anything in the morning, early afternoon is out for me. -
-
Re: Dancing this weekend
Fri, July 21, 2006 - 5:21 PMEither way sounds good to me and later would work better for me as well. If anyone gets out tonight, I'm on my way to Empire Room in about 30 minutes. I need to sweat and get some new moves :) -
-
Re: Dancing this weekend
Sun, July 23, 2006 - 8:47 AMI'll give Layla a call and see what you all have decided about practice. A head's up on the performances: Thoron is desperately trying to persuade Chrissy and Tony to come out and it looks promising (*doe eyes smile plead*) And I'm dragging M'Chelle out kicking and screaming for at least one dance. I've also gotten an email from the lovely Vina and she and her partner are going to do a number as well :) At this rate, I may be able to grab a drum, stand to the side, schmooz and be decorative! ;) Anyhow I'll see you all today and Jivette, wanna do the sword skit? It could be fun.......... :) -

Re: Dancing this weekend
Sun, July 23, 2006 - 12:34 PMUm sorry I'm late in reading this. Belle said something to me about a discussion on tribe about meeting at my house and I promptly forgot to check it. I went to the Raffa Seminar in Sedalia yesterday which I thoroughly enjoyed and was just washing the dishes when I remebered that we were supposed to get together and dance. Right now my living room is occupied with gamers but I'm all for meeting up later at Jivete's this evening if everyone else is game. Layla -

Re: Dancing this weekend
Sun, July 23, 2006 - 3:45 PMWhat actual day is this? Its saturday right? 29th? -
-
Re: Dancing this weekend
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 5:52 AMYup. This coming Saturday....dum dum DUUUUUUUM! Goddess I'm out of shape. Okay, looks like M'Chelle is coming out to play, Vina and her partner are doing a number, Ms Cherry of the Eyeful Tour is doing god knows what, and Jivette and Layla have what I hear is a "f*cing amazing sword dance". On top of that we've got Jason, Gabe, Thoron, Tony, Kyrka, Bob and possibly Chrissy on the instrumental side. Kids I'd say we've got one hell of a diverse show going! Ladies, any chance your getting together this Wed night? I'm skipping class if you do.

Re: Dancing this weekend
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 6:03 AMYes Sat, right in conflict with stich & bitch.
I talked to Belle last night on my way home from Arkansas and I guess we didn't practice last night? Well wednesday normal time for sure. As for Grinders, the word I'm hearing is 3-10 minute spots. Is that correct Satowi? My understanding is it's all pretty flexible but won't be determined exactly until that night. I guess if we all have a little somethin', somethin' to do than it should all be cool. Also we need to give performer names & 1 guest name to Rich before Saturday at 9am.
It's my last week in Westport, and Connor is at his dad's all week, so if anyone wants to get together sometime... -
-
Re: Dancing this weekend
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 7:40 AMThat's what I've heard too Jivette and I'm up for practicing whenever we can get the chance. I think the dancing is really up to us. There are about two periods throughout the evening where he wants SOMETHING going on up in the stage area. How we come up with the set, or how long everyone needs is pretty much up to us as far as I've heard. Then there's the amateur bellydance competition. Any ideas for that one? I'd love to mess with people instead of having a straight forward lesson. On the other hand....it would be a great way to plug your classes Layla. Ideas? I'm in sore need of both practice and inspiration. I've become stagnant again in dance. -

Re: Dancing this weekend
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 8:21 AMok so practice on Wed. What are we all wearing? I finally have armored boobs like everyone else so perhaps we could wear those, panel skirts, fish net, that kind of thing? -

New Subject
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 8:25 AMI suggest a brand new thread for planning - this one is all over the place.
(Can't tell one day to the next if this previous Saturday, Sunday or a date in the future are the deal, yadda yadda yadda.)
I have my kiddo Wednesday, but might be able to work something out.
Any chance I can get a look at the sheet music Jivette mentioned between now and then?

Re: New Subject
Wed, July 26, 2006 - 11:15 AMAlright ladies, I'll see you at Layla's house tonight :) Thoron said he may stop by after dropping Nuy off at work to talk rhythms with us. Also spoke to Rich and the 3rd set is optional. If we want to do just the two, he's fine with that as well. He wants to finish up by midnight-ish. Layla I'm going to give you a call here in a bit to see what time everyone's headed that way and if anyone needs anything else, give me a holla' ;)
-
Re: New Subject
Wed, July 26, 2006 - 3:26 PMI noticed that too. I have no explanation. -

Re: New Subject
Thu, July 27, 2006 - 5:43 AMGoddess it was great to hang out with all the girls last night! It's been to freakin' long!!! Rich called this morning to say there may or may not be some final changes and we'll know by 11 this afternoon at the latest. As soon as I know, I'll post it here. -
-
Re: New Subject
Thu, July 27, 2006 - 9:08 AMJust heard from Rich and any possible changes they were thinking of making were nixed. Looks like everything goes as planned :)
